In the past, it was our way for opposite sexes to come closer when society customs were strict. There are times where “our enemy” will get our help when they don’t expect it. Generations that were raised in World War II were exaggerating in almost everything.
They will not be against having a partner that works, as nowadays, two salaries are better than one, but they also appreciate a woman who takes care of her home and children.Drinks on a Monday or on a Tuesday are not unusual and a spontaneous night out with his/her friends is never out of the question. Greeks are pretty laid-back and don’t care about the small things.From family reunions to dining out with your partner’s best buddies, you will quickly understand what living the Greek life is. Of course, things need to be serious before your partner invites you to tag along, but once you have a stable relationship, you can be sure that you will get to spend summers in the family home or at least, spend some time in Greece. As long as you get there and are ready to have a good time, the time you arrive at has little importance.It will save you time and from lots of frustration. We assume you date someone from Greece or are getting into that situation. “Good looks” is radically rising in Greece (to the borders of exaggeration in some cases). When Greeks cook for a name day, birthday, Christmas, New Year Eve, Easter Sunday and many other holidays they cook a lot of different foods. We mostly seem to lose friends, sea, sun, beaches, food, wine, talking out loud, and many more.Some of our ways of acting seem closer to those of Italians, but Italians are not Greeks (or maybe they are). People in other countries see that there is something “different” with us. From Eurovision to a game of backgammon or multi-sports, you will see Greek men and women get passionate. Just throw them competition on who can make the best “ntolmadakia.” In our traditional coffee shops (called “kafeneio”) you will see two people playing backgammon and another ten around them shouting and giving instructions. Well, our face -even a slight nose twist- will give you a good hint on how we feel for what you are saying or showing. They are carried over from generation to generation, getting less each time. If you are invited to a Greek house for dinner then -usually- the mother will cook a lot of things. These are the most common names you will find in many Greek families. It comes from the tradition to name the newborn with the name of the father’s/mother’s father/mother so to “keep the name in the family.” Makes no sense. This is a showing gratitude and respect for the elders and their contribution to your upraising. We have provided terminology and knowledge for many though and this is used worldwide. You can swim in Greek beaches without being afraid you might get eaten by any mammal.
Whether your partner is doing the cooking, or if his/her mom sees you off after a family dinner with a Tupperware filled with leftovers, rest assured that there will always be food on the table (or in the fridge) during those busy weekdays when you don’t have time to cook dinner.
